Another Successful Norwood Day

This past Saturday saw yet another successful Norwood Day that brought in hundreds of businesses, vendors, activities, and plenty of familiar faces. Despite taking place earlier than usual (Labor Day was quite late in 2026), this year’s event drew an impressive crowd and gave residents another opportunity to learn more about the organizations and businesses that make up the Norwood community.

Norwood Recreation Director Sam White helped coordinate the event, and he said planning for the big day began months in advance with the help of a number of Town departments and community resources.

“We start for Norwood early in the year, so typically in January we are planning for August or September,” White said. “But it is a full team effort. Everyone in the civic chips in.”

Although this year’s Norwood Day was held in late August rather than its typical early September date, White said he was pleased with the turnout. With local youth sports programs not yet fully underway and school still out for the summer, he said the earlier date may have helped bring out “some more families that we typically don’t see.”

Another change this year, White also mentioned, was the addition of trolley rides that brought attendees to several locations throughout town.

“We haven’t done it in a few years now, so we just wanted to try to bring that back,” White said.

While the trolleys, among other activities, gave residents much to do, the day also was a great chance for local businesses to introduce themselves. Among the several lining Washington Street, the Norwood Youth Lounge made its first appearance at Norwood Day this year.

Founded in April of this year with the support of the Roots of Hope foundation, the Norwood Youth Lounge provides after-school recreational programming at the Winsmith Mill, and therapeutic services and mentoring for older youth.

Founder and Norwood resident Dawn Shelton said her own experiences trying to find after-school programming helped inspire her to create the organization.

“Through the past several years, after-school programming has been very challenging for me to find for my kids,” Shelton said. “So in the field that I am in, I was thinking, ‘what can be done about this?’”

Shelton, who is a social worker and mother of children in the Norwood schools, said Norwood Day was a perfect opportunity to help residents learn about the program.

“A lot of people haven’t heard about our program, the Norwood Youth Lounge, so it’s wonderful that we’re out here and able to spread the word,” she added. “It feels like the community is very receptive and people are very interested in the programming.”

For some of the more established organizations, the day offered a different kind of opportunity.

Tom Maloney, an eight-year member of the Neponset Valley Sunrise Rotary Club and a former Selectman, expressed that Norwood Day allowed them to not only connect with potential new members, but also catch up with familiar faces.

“For us, it’s great not just to recruit, but also to meet and talk to people whom we know from other organizations and the town,” he said. “All the people we meet, and the people we re-meet, and all the friends we’ve known for all these years and maybe haven’t seen in a while.”

Much like the Rotary, members of the Norwood Garden Club also used the event as a chance to connect with residents and showcase their work.

Beyond gardening, the club hosts a variety of events and educational programs throughout the year, including monthly presentations led by knowledgeable gardeners and master gardeners.

“It’s just fun, it’s exciting,” member Janet said. “Gardening feeds your soul. I don’t know how else to describe it.”

For her, Maloney, Shelton, and the many other organizations that showed up for Norwood Day, it was the people that made the event worthwhile.

“Through events like these,” Janet said, “it’s always nice to see people you know.”

Likewise, Maloney echoed that the community is “the best part of the whole thing.”

Wrapping it up, White shared a similar sentiment when reflecting on the event as a whole.

“My favorite part about Norwood Day is just seeing the whole community come together,” he said. “Just from businesses, organizations, teams, residents that are coming out and showing support, and everyone’s together. It’s great to see.”
