Bell Dedication July 4
Fire Bell No. 7 history
July 2, 2026

The ringing of this fire bell was part of South Dedham’s annual July 4th Independence Day celebration. As tensions between the mother town of Dedham and the village of South Dedham increased, Dedham officials forbid the ringing of the bell in 1868. Nevertheless, fire fighters defiantly sounded the bell, adding a spark to the village’s desire for independence. Four years later, in 1872, the town of Norwood was incorporated.
