GAKEN

James P., aged 79, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 26, 2026, at his home in Norwood, surrounded by the love, comfort, and care of his family. He was the devoted husband of the late Elaine R. (Broderick) Gaken, who passed away on April 15, 2024.
Born in Buffalo, New York, James was one of three children born to the late Florian and Lillian Gaken. He was raised and educated in Dunkirk, New York. Following high school, James was drafted into the United States Army and served overseas in Vietnam during the height of the war. Upon receiving an honorable discharge after completing his three-year military commitment, he was recognized for his bravery and service with numerous commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
Following his military service, James lived in several locations, including New York City, where he worked as an elevator operator at a prestigious hotel. By a stroke of fate, he met the woman who would become his wife through his sister, who introduced him to her co-worker, Elaine. Together, they built a life in Norwood, where James would proudly call home for more than 45 years.
James enjoyed a long career in the financial services industry, working for various banking and financial institutions throughout the area. He was known for his strong work ethic, dedication, and commitment to providing for his family.
Outside of work, James had many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed bowling, casino trips, and cruising with Elaine. He liked playing scratch tickets, though he was careful never to spend more than five dollars on one. A lifelong and devoted Buffalo Bills fan, James closely followed both his favorite team and the news from his hometown in Western New York. Above all else, he cherished time spent with his family and found his greatest joy in creating lasting memories with those he loved most.
James is survived by his proud and cherished children, Kristen Gaken, Julie Wotring and her husband Marc, and James W. Gaken; his beloved grandchildren, Bridger Wotring, Cullen Wotring, Brody Gaken, and Jordan Gaken; his siblings, Joseph Gaken and Jane Sullivan and her husband Jack; as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
