DONOVAN
Richard W., age 92, a longtime resident of Norwood, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, July 25, 2026, surrounded by the love, comfort, and care of his family at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He was the devoted husband of 71 wonderful years to Claire (Fitzgerald) Donovan of Norwood.
Born in Boston, Richard was one of two sons born to the late Francis and Mary (McDonough) Donovan. He was raised and educated in South Boston. By chance, on a night out with friends, at the young age of 19, Richard met the love of his life, Claire. Their chance meeting turned into a lifelong romance and a marriage that spanned more than seven decades.
A proud patriot, Richard enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War era. He served honorably for two years and, upon his discharge, attained the rank of Private First Class.
Following his military service, Richard sought to make a difference in the city where he was raised and joined the Boston Police Department. Throughout his distinguished 22-year career with the BPD, he served in various districts and assignments. Upon his well-earned retirement, Richard held the rank of Lieutenant.
Outside of his professional life, Richard was a gifted craftsman and accomplished woodworker. He possessed the ability to build, repair, and improve just about anything. Over the years, he personally completed numerous home improvement projects at both his family home in Norwood and his beloved lake house in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. Above all else, Richard treasured the time he spent with his family and the countless memories they created together.
In addition to his beloved wife, Claire, Richard is survived by his loving children: Richard Donovan of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Eileen Vegan and her husband, Frank, of Wilmington; Michael Donovan and his wife, Shelia, of Canton; and Janet Donovan of Franklin. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren and great-grandfather of eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many extended family members and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his son, Paul Donovan, and his brother, Francis Donovan.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Parish, 547 Washington Street, Norwood.
Richard will be laid to rest with United States Army honors at Highland Cemetery in Norwood.
